A company has three options for old computers: refurbish and reuse, sell to a licensed buyer if they have value, or recycle. In every case, destroy the data first by secure wiping or physical destruction, hand the devices to a WMRA-licensed recycler, and get a data destruction certificate and a recycling certificate.
The three options
| Option | When it fits | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Refurbish & reuse | Relatively recent working devices | Secure data wiping |
| Sell | Devices with market value | Licensed buyer + data destruction |
| Recycle | Faulty or very old devices | Licensed recycler + certificate |
Steps
- Inventory devices with serial numbers.
- Back up the data you need.
- Destroy data — on-site if required.
- Choose the route: refurbish, sell or recycle.
- Hand over to a licensed recycler.
- Receive certificates and update the asset register.
Common mistakes
- Storing devices for years until they pile up.
- Donating devices without wiping them.
- Giving them to staff or selling to an unlicensed dealer.
- Keeping no documents.

Yes, but only after secure, documented data wiping, since devices may hold company and customer data.
What about devices from staff who left?
Treat them like any data-bearing device: redeploy after secure wiping, or destroy and recycle.
Is there a minimum number of devices?
We collect from companies in different volumes and schedule pickup by quantity and location.
